Hi Ed, with so much media talk about Varane potentially moving, is there any interest from Chelsea? Seems odd that all the talk seems to be about United.

Kentonio

{Ed002's Note - Raphael Varane (CB) If he does not sign a renewal he will be sold in the summer - possibly leaving Real Madrid needing to add three CBs. Manchester United have a preferred target but could be tempted. Mr Mourinho was looking for a way to sign Varane for Spurs in the summer but he will now be off the list for them. He is also on the list of CB options the Chelsea coach has identified but the wages will likely put them off. He may yet sign a new deal if he thinks the club are moving in the right direction with ZZ gone. The player wants a new challenge and PSG may push for him in their quest for a leading French player to join to keep the fans appeased.

Thanks Ed!

I have the feeling Varane will be staying in Madrid.

3.) 04 Jul 2021 06:51:16
He's off to Manchester Tom.

4.) 04 Jul 2021 11:57:49
He may well end up at Utd Ashk but I have this feeling he will sign a new contract with RM.

What better way to get a massively improved contract than for Utd, PSG or us to be interested.

I know it’s me being a cynic.

Hi Ed, is there any substance to the rumours about Chelsea and United talking to Bayern about Lewandowski?

Kentonio

{Ed002's Note - Not that I am aware.}

1.) 23 Jun 2017 09:19:33
Thank you Ed.

Hi Eds,

There are rumours appearing that Antonio Rudiger might be looking to exit Italy after suffering racial abuse from Inter fans and that Chelsea are interested. Any truth to it?

Cheers.

Kentonio

{Ed002's Note - Nothing has changed - I have previously explained Chelsea's interest and one option Roma would be open to.}

Ok, thank you.

Hi Ed, I'm having a debate with someone about agent fees and just wondered if you could clear up one point for us? Do clubs know in advance how big a fee an agent will expect, or is this only presented during discussion over personal terms?

Thanks in advance, and if you can't help then no problem.

Kentonio

{Ed002's Note - In advance of what?}

1.) 09 Jul 2017 16:08:02
As in, before the clubs have agreed a transfer fee. The debate was whether an surprisingly excessive agent fee could derail a transfer.

{Ed002's Note - It doesn't really work like that.}

2.) 09 Jul 2017 17:06:49
Oh ok, thanks very much. I guess a lot of what we assume about that side of things is just picked up from media gossip and Football Manager. :)

{Ed002's Note - The process should be along the lines of: Clubs will typically informally ask an agent (a) if the player is going to be available, and (b) would the player consider a move to the club. There may be some broad discussion on the sort of deal that would be offered but no more than that. If the answer is yes, it is then necessary for the club to approach the player's club to ask if they would be willing to sell and if they would grant permission to speak to a player's agent formally about a transfer and possibly even the player about actually making a move. This will typically involve either broadly (through an offer) or actually agreeing a fee and responsibility for any significant costs (agents fees etc.). Once this has happened the club will be able to speak to the player's agent and perhaps the player himself to look at the package that will be involved. Many players are looked at and discussed at a high-level with agents and clubs; a subset of those have an offer placed; a subset of those involve discussions with the player's club; a subset of those involve discussions over terms, and; a subset of those go ahead.

Agents will often try and get more specific details of wages and other financials before they should - but most clubs are happy to follow this process. Players will often talk to other players about moves but, whilst wrong, is tolerated as it would be impossible to manage.}

Brilliant, thank you very much for the concise description. Much appreciated.

I was feeling ok about our end of season run in before, but after that shocking performance it absolutely terrifies me now. Feels like unless Mata and Hazard play every game and risk burning them both out, we're destined for Europa again.

Then again CFCShak, the goalkeeper has a much more important image in Russian culture than in other footballing nations. It's probably why over the years we've always had extremely talented and expensive goalkeepers. I wouldn't be shocked if Roman did it again.

Surprised they thought he was slow, I watched most Lyon games last year and the kid has some immense potential. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Kentonio

{Ed001's Note - depends on what they mean by slow, could be slow of thought or slow of understanding instructions.}

Fekir is good, but he's not Hazard levels of good. He shines at Lyon because the overall level is a fair bit lower than the PL, but he's also prone to endless diving and various antics to wind up opponents, which makes him card prone. I wouldn't mind him at Chels, but if he goes elsewhere I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. It's a gamble whether he'd fit into the PL.

Gerrard had the most raw talent but he needed to leave Liverpool and join a team where he was made to concentrate on a particular role instead of his unceasing attempts to try and do everything. Hard to call between Lamps and Scholes, Lamps for me just because of his unbelievable consistency and ability to turn games with his striking rate. We remember the number of goals he scored for us, but tend to forget how many of those goals came just at the right moment to save us, or grab a win we didn't look like getting.

Fabregas has said he prefers playing deep rather than further forward.
