Jose to Real Madrid. Alonso now looks favourite to join us. If that does happen, I’ve got to buy my mate a pint.
1.) 29 Apr 2026 09:31:39
I sincerely hope you are right about Jose, but completely wrong about Alonso, Tom.
2.) 29 Apr 2026 09:45:33
Out of curiosity, Bill, what's your objection to Alonso being made the manager?
3.) 29 Apr 2026 10:14:21
Bill, you didn't want Maresca calling him "Leicester Maresca" before he even arrived, and now you are against Alonso, two coaches who have achieved success in their short managerial careers, yet you championed Liam from the off, even saying we should keep him and give him a full pre-season? Could you share your logic with us all, please?
4.) 29 Apr 2026 12:55:58
No problems, I wanted LR to be given a chance because he had no pre season, no time to work with the players and had a total of one player he worked with. That being said, there was absolutely no way he could survive when the players downed tools.
Coming onto Alonso, yesterday had an excellent season with Bl, but tanked when he came up against the egos of Rm. LR and Alonso could not turn it around when players put their tools back in their ego box.
Hope that explains my views.
5.) 29 Apr 2026 13:36:53
Fair enough.
I feel like Madrid has never been a systems team, and if our players have half the egos of the RM lot, they are not only delusional as to their importance, but we got to clear the rot.
Liam and Xabi can't be compared either. Playing for one of the greatest midfielders of his generation who has won a league title as manager in a league mostly dominated by one team vs a journeyman wash out who constantly made a fool of himself in interviews and has never won anything as a player or manager.
Xabi may not have been able to tame the Madrid egos. However, our lot are far closer to Leverkusen in ability than to Real Madrid.
I have seen some fair criticism of his style of football and what he expects of his players, but very few managers in world football could do much with this Madrid team so I certainly don't judge his failure in Spain.
Who would you like to come in, Bill?
6.) 29 Apr 2026 14:19:13
Melbourne, I would go for Hoeness.
7.) 29 Apr 2026 15:20:12
What is it about Hoeness that appeals? I ask sincerely, as I haven't watched his teams play, and I was under the impression he hasn't won much. I know Tris is also an admirer, and has said he is similar to Klopp in his teams' intensity and press.
8.) 29 Apr 2026 15:53:44
That's what has been missing, Melbourne. Too much possession and not enough intensity.
Just look at last night's game. It was a terrific watch. It pains me to say it, but I also liked the Liverpool team under Klopp. Teams were beaten in the first 15 minutes.
9.) 29 Apr 2026 16:22:08
I would add a caveat. It all depends on who the SDs buy and sell in the summer.
No point in having a good coach if your best players are sold.
10.) 30 Apr 2026 00:59:35
I don't disagree. The big difference when Liam first arrived (unlikely his doing) was we played with intensity. Same reason we dominated the first 35 minutes against Leeds.
11.) 30 Apr 2026 08:06:39
We played with great intensity in Liam's first few games because he freely admitted he didn't change anything and carried on the Maresca approach, which had us comfortably sitting in a Champions League spot!
12.) 30 Apr 2026 09:37:06
Tbh, Greenaway, there was close to zero intensity in the 'Maresca' approach for months. One of the reasons I wasn't fussed with him leaving was that the build up was slow and created extremely little, especially against low blocks. I expect Maresca to be sacked within 18 months if he does join Citeh.
13.) 30 Apr 2026 09:42:52
Melbourne
I totally agree with you on Maresca's tactics. Bored the life out of me.
I also agree with your view if he joins City.
14.) 30 Apr 2026 10:41:30
Looking at reports today, Alonso wants more say within the club. That's that then.
15.) 30 Apr 2026 21:31:26
Bill, you hated Maresca and wanted him out before he even joined, like your view on Lampard, Jose returning and now Alonso, but the truth is, Maresca had us in a Champions League spot. We are now 10 points off it after your mate Liam took over. Grass greener? All banter, mate, and I respect your opinion and our differing views.
BTW, I think we will all be moaning on here in a few years time as Maresca develops into an elite manager. All opinions, of course, and that is the great thing about this wonderful site, we can all share our different opinions.
16.) 01 May 2026 09:00:06
Greenaway
If Maresca did not have a hissy fit, then he would probably still be our coach, with, as Tom says, an end of season review in sight.
The club were not looking to remove him pre-season; he removed himself.
Where the club went wrong was hiring a young coach who is not at our level. Equally, I don't believe Lamps is at that level yet.
Jose has made enough money out of our club. I don't want him to earn any more severance from us. I have already given my views on why I don't want Alonso.
Would I moan if Maresca does well? Hell no, he won't be at our club, which is all I care about. He is another part of our history.
Just out of curiosity, why do you want Alonso, Greenaway, and, more importantly, why do you think he would succeed when he tanked at RM, bearing in mind our players also down tools.
Also, I have to say, the grass is currently greener, but hopefully will become yellow with a good summer.
17.) 01 May 2026 10:53:33
Bill, you wanted Maresca out from the day he was appointed, mate, and even after he got us top 4 last season and won us 2 pots, but as you say, that is now in the past. As for our next manager/head coach, I would throw a few names in the pot, but none of them are likely. Klopp being my ultimate pick, but that just won't happen. Enrique would be perfect, but that won't happen. Conte would bring discipline and fitness, and would also be on my list, as would TT and Jose, but again, that won't happen.
Of the three names being banded about at the moment, Alonso is the standout. He has plenty of top-level experience as a player with Liverpool, Real, Bayern Munich and Spain, and as a coach. He won the World Cup and the Champions League twice as a player, and took Bayer Leverkusen to the final of the Europa League whilst winning the Bundesliga against all the odds. That said, I imagine he is highly sought after and may well still end up at Liverpool.
27 Apr 2026 15:21:11
I was told this morning that one of the bigger Premiership teams is negotiating a sale for over £5bn.
I actually thought it might be the spuds but if they get relegated I can’t see them achieving that price, although I think that might be my biased opinion.
1.) 27 Apr 2026 15:48:33
Think it's Liverpool, Tom.
2.) 27 Apr 2026 18:57:38
Thanks, Bill.
22 Apr 2026 13:46:54
If the latest social media rumours are true and LR is no longer our manager, I honestly hope that decision doesn't allow other decision makers off the hook.
1.) 22 Apr 2026 15:50:18
I think the leadership are just talking about what they want for dinner, Tom.
2.) 22 Apr 2026 17:28:01
Maybe not, he is gone.
28 Mar 2026 12:30:12
I can't keep up with all the transfer rumours associated with Chelsea but was out with and mat yesterday who told me Liverpool and Chelsea are chasing a young Swiss CH. He did tell me the name but I can't remember it and I've now got a massive hangover. All sounds very familiar with Chelsea missing out to Liverpool for a young, talented CH.
1.) 28 Mar 2026 15:53:29
That's exactly what we need, Tom, another youngster at the back.
Probably finish up at Strasbourg for a couple of seasons anyway.
2.) 28 Mar 2026 18:05:34
Always look on the bright side of life.
3.) 28 Mar 2026 19:18:01
I can feel a song coming on.
4.) 28 Mar 2026 21:37:57
Bill, agree, that's the last thing we need: another trading card. We have two very good young CBs, Josh and Levi; what we really need is two experienced CBs.
5.) 29 Mar 2026 08:42:53
I think Sarr looks useful. He is just finding his Premiership feet. It happens.
I love transfer rumours but very rarely the reality. I do remember being told by my mate that it isn't just us and Liverpool looking at the young Swiss CH. There are lots of other interested teams.
6.) 29 Mar 2026 15:04:58
We have plenty of young centre backs. Let Liverpool have the Swiss big cheese, and we can have VVD.
7.) 29 Mar 2026 15:16:43
I can only say that the few times I've watched Liverpool this season VVD hasn't impressed me!!
They have already signed a young CH for next season, and I was gutted he decided to go there instead of coming to us.
{Ed001's Note - Liverpool signed 4 this season, 1 in the summer and 3 in January.}
8.) 29 Mar 2026 15:59:26
I was only gutted about the one in January Ed. He looks useful.
{Ed001's Note - Leoni looks brilliant, shame about his ACL. But you are talking about Jacquet.}
9.) 29 Mar 2026 16:17:19
Yep, that's the lad. I am useless with names, amongst other things!!
17 Feb 2026 21:41:11
Could this be true? Chelsea get heavy fine and transfer ban suspended for two widows. This is the judgment for our 74 offences while under the RA ownership.
A mate tells me that is the rumour he has heard. If it is true, I think the club should except the punishment and move on.
1.) 18 Feb 2026 08:09:26
Best to wait and see Tom, there were lots of rumours about a FOS that never materialised.
2.) 18 Feb 2026 15:55:18
I have big doubts about it being true. Another mate told me he heard we have got a 15pt penalty, a fine and transfer ban.
3.) 18 Feb 2026 18:26:15
Tom, being reported by The Daily Mail that supporters can anticipate NON-SPORTING sanctions as an outcome.
That would mean a FINE rather than, say, a transfer ban or points deduction.
4.) 18 Feb 2026 20:19:18
Maybe mate (a) was correct.
I personally think it would be harsh on our present owners, they appear to have acted correctly.
5.) 19 Feb 2026 09:49:04
Thecdaily mail said it is the owners views that we will get a fine and transfer ban, not actual info.

How can Ben White be considered for England?
1.) 30 Apr 2026 09:46:47
Because TT is the coach, Tom.
2.) 30 Apr 2026 11:19:34
Tbf, not a lot of options at RB apart from Reece. I presume he (White) is in the squad because he can play CB, where there is also a paucity of talent. Let's hope Reece and Levi are fit.
{Ed001's Note - and he is not going to pick Trent, no matter what kind of form he is in, due to Tommy Tuchel dating his ex and the pair fell out over it.}
3.) 30 Apr 2026 11:49:51
Levi won't go to the World Cup and maybe Reece won't either due to their injury issues.
4.) 30 Apr 2026 12:43:32
I think James is a certainty, but maybe a bit too soon for Colwill.
29 Apr 2026 07:22:51.
I have never had my ticket for sale for so long on the ticket exchange. Mind you, it is a stupid KO time.
1.) 29 Apr 2026 09:29:56
Tom, I can't make Monday's game and have just put my ticket on the exchange.
Apparently there is a meeting on 6th May between the club and supporters regarding the club's updated ticketing policy. Leaving aside pricing, I wonder what that's all about. Probably not good news!
28 Apr 2026 20:53:39
Probably the best 45 mins of football I've seen in a very long time. How refreshing to see players moving the ball forward or taking players on and going both ways!
Maybe it will start a trend?
1.) 28 Apr 2026 21:26:10
Amazing, Tom. It really highlights what a brilliant job Maresca did for us in delivering that Club World Cup.
2.) 28 Apr 2026 21:37:17
It's a great game, pace in abundance, always looking to go forward and having players who know how to score.
3.) 28 Apr 2026 21:43:37
Absolutely agree, but some of the defending is questionable. However, who cares, great to watch.
4.) 28 Apr 2026 22:03:17
I'm just going with great attacking play, and it just shows, even when you go a few goals down against PSG, if your heads don't drop and give in, you can make it a close game.
5.) 28 Apr 2026 22:12:34
That was so enjoyable. Couldn't take my old eyes off the game. Brilliant to watch as a neutral.
27 Apr 2026 21:37:27
Sadly I have had to put my ST on the ticket exchange for the Forest game, just in case one of you guys want to go!
1.) 28 Apr 2026 08:35:11
Hope your health is good, Tom.
2.) 28 Apr 2026 09:38:41
I'm ok ish thanks, Bill. Just struggling with arthritis more than anything else. JD's seem to help.
3.) 28 Apr 2026 13:12:56
Keep them coming, Tom.
27 Apr 2026 20:50:50
I have really enjoyed tonight’s Premiership game between two sides having a go at one another.
If only this was typical of the Premiership.
1.) 28 Apr 2026 06:51:59
Totally agree, Tom, end to end attacking, no 200 passes, just to get out of your own box.
27 Apr 2026 18:57:38
Thanks, Bill.
16 Apr 2026 16:53:23
Bill, anyone can get sacked. A bit like LR, I can't see any of the SDs getting sacked, having just been given a vote of confidence with a contract extension.
16 Apr 2026 08:44:29
Bill, I may well be wrong, but I seem to remember reading they (SD's) have had their contracts extended.
15 Apr 2026 14:07:44
Whitey, you may well be right about an experienced manager being an important attribute with such a young squad.
I just can't see the SD's or owners pulling the plug anytime soon.
15 Apr 2026 10:18:27
Bill, I haven't got a clue about players' loss of morale and confidence. Certainly, both are fragile commodities, but can come back with a few positive results.
Last season, with about ten games left of the season, we had posters using the same cliches as they are now.
We finished that season on a positive note, and that should show how quickly things can change.
Let's also not forget that, under all ownerships, mistakes are made, and things do not always get better.
30 Apr 2026 21:42:43
Whoever takes the job will have their critics.
It seems to be common practice to have a dividing line between coaching and player recruitment. I'm sure whoever takes over as manager will have some input on signings.
30 Apr 2026 17:06:16
Depends on the choice of manager and the players he may need for his preferred style of play.
30 Apr 2026 12:43:32
I think James is a certainty, but maybe a bit too soon for Colwill.
30 Apr 2026 12:39:35
Bill, of course, we don't, and that's my point. It's been mentioned under two different ownerships, loads of managers, and lots of players.
I do understand why, as we seem to have had a succession of players who crumble under adversity, but I also think it's an excuse from a manager's play book.
30 Apr 2026 10:23:07
I have made reference before to the long list of managers, starting with Sarri, that have all mentioned players' mental weakness. I can see why they might have said that, but I also think it's a partial cover by an equally long list of poor managers.
