I like the Martinez link, aside from the fact he's a better keeper than Sanchez, top 3 in the Premier League on most metrics, he's an incredible presence and very vocal and another experienced leader.
He'll add a level of confidence to the defence that's been sadly missing since Courtois.
It also leaves a clear path for young Penders.

Our opinions are usually based on guesswork. I personally also admit to being biased and occasionally having an agenda, but what on earth does my, or any posters' opinions really matter?
As far as players' sakes are concerned, I'm pleased we are trying to sell certain players, but unhappy about selling others.
It's the same when it comes to our signings, some I like, and one I'm potentially not very happy about. In over sixty years of supporting my club, it has always been the same when it comes to the buying and selling of players.

Looks a possibilty that Martinez may be coming good goalkeeper but cannot stand the player.
Got me thinking on the players Chelsea signed and I couldn't stand them nos one has to be be Micky Thomas with the most recent being Garnacho am sure there were a few others but my memory is not what it was.

Likewise was very disappointed when we signed Garnacho – a player I'd always loved to hate at United.
Aubameyang – no thanks.
Turned out to be a good player for us, but Marcos Alonso was a pr*ck off the pitch.

Delap purchased for £30 million and sold 1 year later for £50 million. Quite astonishing and further evidence that these yankie owners don't "blow millions" as some would argue but make "millions". I have said it before they know very little about football or "soccer" but certainly know how to generate huge revenue.

Surely, that's not skill on their part (or the part of their sporting directors), but just inflation? In a market that's regularly seeing £100-million players now, Savinho just went to Spurs for £70 million after City bought him in 2024 for £30 million. What has he done in his time in England to justify more than doubling of the price?

EdW, that would be some inflation increase. I have no idea why the season's summer window has been so bonkers, but my guess would be the regulator reset has had something to do with it.
Striker fees always seem to demand a premium, but who cares.
If they all come off, my guess is the club will post a transfer profit for this window and bring the current owners nett spend down significantly since they took over.

Tom, agreed, but it's clearly happened. Even the Italian teams are paying ridiculous money now - AC Milan have paid £65 million for Diego Moreira, who we sold to Strasbourg for £1.4 million (with that hefty sell-on) in 2024, whilst also paying roughly the same amount for Goncalo Ramos in the same summer.

Apparently Tosin and Disasi for fees, so that helps, and I'm not that unhappy with Badiashile going out on loan.
Guiu is wanted, and I guess his will be a permanent deal. I can't see Neto or Gusto leaving. Although, I have this feeling a big offer will come in late for Neto.

Camavinga is the new rumour to replace EF if he leaves, Tom. Bournemouth have strongly rejected our approaches to Scott, according to the papers. Would be quite an incredible signing, I think, if we could get him, though not sure he'd be a direct replacement in terms of position - probably more suited to Alonso's system than EF, though, who's not fast enough for the centre of the park.

Great to get a win last night, plenty of positives.
Also EF will 99% leave, his body language at the end was terrible. My only concern is that I loved the deadline our club did, we gave clubs the opportunity. I just wish we stick to our guns and don't allow the move.
He had his chance and no one took it. Now knuckle down and play for Chelsea FC, a lot of players would jump at the chance to join us.
In an ideal world, if he goes to City is that the FA give them a 60 point deduction, that would be perfect karma.

Like the way you're thinking about City, Steve! But Enzo Fernandez was good for us, and professional in his performance yesterday. So, if we let him go for a suitably colossal sum to the ever financially dodgy Light Blues, we absolutely have to add another top-notch midfielder to replace him, if only because Caicedo's absence last night and our lack of sufficient control in midfield from the James-Lavia combo, plus Lavia not lasting 90 mins, demonstrated.

Lots of positives from last night, the front 3 can score against anyone, Palmer had his best game in over a year, Lacroix had an excellent debut and we have missed a commanding presence like him at the back.
I felt most players did well but Colwill had a really shaky game and Gusto’s passing was poor.
Ok, here I go again, the goalkeeper! I feel we have 2 options - Diogo Costa or, might be unpopular, Emi Martinez is available possibly a loan?
I don’t agree with the blocking Penders development argument, he is one for the future and untested at this level.
Football is results based and results based now, not in the future.
We need to make the change now.

Swfc, I was banging the drum for us to sign Costa all last season. I think the blocking argument is valid, but I am less inclined to go with the untried and young argument. If he is as good as people say, then pick him.
I wouldn’t have Martinez anywhere near our club. Any ability he had has long since passed, and, to me, he doesn’t look like a guy that sets a good example.
He is on a very long list of Premiership goalkeepers who are well below standard. Putting aside Raya and Anderson, the remainder may well be the worst batch of keepers in Premiership history, in my opinion.

I am totally disinterested in other clubs goalkeepers. We have got ourselves in a bit of a pickle. It appears Penders isn't deemed ready to start and we go into the season with Sanchez as our number 1. I accept the concerns about blocking Pender's path, but if Sanchez remains as a starter our path to Champions League football will be blocked.

Jimbo, that's why managers get paid the big bucks to make big calls. I personally don't think he will change Sanchez for the Brighton game, but I would be very happy to be wrong!!

Sanchez became Brighton's third choice keeper for a reason. Expect they would quite like to see him in goal for us on Sunday. Though, obviously, if he is, I would hope he could make up for his shocker versus Fulham.

GK and midfield (if Enzo leaves, especially, of course) quality, experienced replacements are key to how we are likely to fare this season - likely crucial to whether we get Champions League football or not.
We still also have tons of players who may or may not leave. Plus, qn of whether on loan or sold.
Heck of a lot still to happen this window, and not great at all if Enzo leaves at the last minute of it. Again, doubt if either Bournemouth or Palace - both with European football this season - would want to lose Scott or Wharton, perhaps not even for crazy money.

Jimbo, obviously, Alonso didn't choose our two keepers, but I am sure if he wanted a top keeper signed the club would have agreed. I am only guessing, but I would think a collective decision was made to go with what we have.
It's now up to Alonso to make the call on selection.
Alonso has seen them both pre season, and, as far as we know, he hasn't said "get me a keeper." Along with others, he will have to take a share of responsibility, as all managers do.

I have no idea if Alonso has asked for a new keeper: we would probably never find out. The club seems heavily invested in Penders, and Sanchez has his mate Roberts watching his back. So I wouldn't assume Alonso is happy with what he has.

I am not assuming anything, I am, as usual, just guessing.
One minute we are all saying "Alonso is influencing the so-called new transfer policy, so I can't see that so-called influence changing when it comes to keepers."
It will be Alonso's choice who to pick in goal against Brighton.
If Penders isn't up to being our keeper, then Alonso should already know that, in my opinion.
What age was big Pete when Jose made the call to pick him instead of CG? Managers are paid to make the big calls.

I'm not into the "blame" game when it comes to transfers. Sanchez is just a player we have signed that hasn't worked out. It happens at every club.
If Penders is good enough, pick him. If not, go out and buy Costa.

Tom, I don't know who the "we are all saying" are. Alonso appears to have had more influence on signings than previous coaches. That doesn't necessarily mean he will get his way on every incoming or outgoing. Yes, he will have to make a decision between a complete dud or a young inexperienced keeper.
Personally, if Penders is as good as some people say, I would throw him in at the deep end. It's hard to conceive that he would do a worse job than Sanchez.

I cannot recall a single poster or fan mate who has not said Alonso seemingly being involved in the transfer decisions isn't a good thing.
No, it doesn't mean he will get his way on every transfer. In my opinion, it should be a collective decision, but if he says he needs a keeper, they should at the very least give it some consideration.
Anyway, this is all academic, play Pinders and let's see what all the noise is about, and yes, it can be worse but at least we know.

Looked at the replay this morning and all our goals were excellent team goals.
Understandably Sanchez has got and will get pelters for their two goals. He certainly should have done a lot better for both.
On review I also wasn't happy with Rogers for their first and Colwill should have done a lot better for their second.
I guess the point is all players make mistakes and when they do you want your keeper to dig you out of trouble.
I did think the Alonso point about problems being easier to solve if you win, was spot on.

Agree with you, Tom.
I don't think that, as yet, Rogers has offered much defensively in his EPL career. Alonso will have to get him to realise his responsibilities are not just attacking ones alone. He also looked knackered after about 40 minutes. But he also showed, of course, plenty to begin to make us more confident that the huge amount of money we paid for him won't be wasted.
What an EPL team needs to win major trophies - and we were so fortunate and/or clever to have Cech followed by Courtois, who were integral to most of ours - is a keeper who is both world class in ability but a big and unflappable personality.
Why Sanchez has been generally so unconvincing - though he did get better for a while under Maresca and had that great CWC game and a few others - is that he looks so eminently flappable/nervous far too often, and this surely transmits itself to his team mates, not least defenders.
Yes, Alonso's point is well taken.
The last week of the transfer window may yet have quite a bearing on how competitive we will be this coming season, and as ever I just wish - and am sure Alonso does! - all transfers had to be concluded before season started!
